Coca-Cola's Latest Drink Hits The Metaverse Before In Real Life
Following Pepsi's NFT Collection, Coca-Cola has announced the latest from its line of Creations soft drinks, an 80's arcade-inspired beverage named Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Byte "Pixel-Flavoured" which Coke describes as "An 8-Bit Pixel experience." The soft drink launch is the result of a collaboration with gaming and lifestyle organisation PWR and will be introduced first in the metaverse of Fortnite. The real-life, physically consumable version of the beverage will follow up with a release in limited quantities from May 2, 2022, and will be available for purchase via the Coca-Cola Creations website.
The digital version of Byte will come first to an "individually created Fortnite Creative experience" named Pixel Point. The in-game island will feature four multiplayer mini-games named The Castle, The Escape, The Race and The Tower - one of which even takes place inside a classic glass Coke bottle.
These mini-games will only be available to play for a limited time. On top of that, there will be an augmented reality game that can be accessed via the Coca-Cola Creations website that will feature a leaderboard to compare completion times via social media.
Coca-Cola certainly isn't the first brand to enter and advertise in the metaverse, where it joins an increasing number of brands that want their products represented within video games. Red Bull energy drinks, for example, have been active in the sponsorship in the game Death Stranding.
This time around, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Byte Pixel-Flavoured joins the previously released 'Starlight' flavour that was promoted with the help of the singer and songwriter Ava Max. Byte will be sold in 12-ounce cans in packs of two - one for consumption and the other meant for collecting. With this in line, Coca-Cola has plans on releasing more limited-edition Creations throughout the year.
